چکیده

Blue Midnight Wish (BMW) is one of the fastest SHA-3 candidates in the second round of the competition. In this paper we study the compression function of BMW and we obtain practical partial collisions in the case of BMW-256: we show a pair of inputs so that 300 pre-specified bits of the outputs collide (out of 512 bits). Our attack requires about 2 evaluations of the compression function. The attack can also be considered as a near-collision attack: we give an input pair with only 122 active bits in the output, while generic algorithm would require 2 operations for the same result. A similar attack can be developed for BMW-512, which will gives message pairs with around 600 colliding bits for a cost of 2. This analysis does not affect the security of the iterated hash function, but it shows that the compression function is far from ideal. We also describe some tools for the analysis of systems of additions and rotations, which are used in our attack, and which can be useful for the analysis of other systems.

Practical Near-Collisions for Reduced Round Blake, Fugue, Hamsi and JH

A hash function is near-collision resistant, if it is hard to find two messages with hash values that differ in only a small number of bits. In this study, we use hill climbing methods to evaluate the nearcollision resistance of some of the round SHA-3 candidates. We practi cally obtained (i) 184/256-bit near-collision for the 2-round compression function of Blake-32; (ii) 192/256-bit near-col...

Pseudo-cryptanalysis of the Original Blue Midnight Wish

The hash function Blue Midnight Wish (BMW) is a candidate in the SHA-3 competition organized by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). BMW was selected for the second round of the competition, but the algorithm was tweaked in a number of ways. In this paper we describe cryptanalysis on the original version of BMW, as submitted to the SHA-3 competition in October 2008. T...

Practical Pseudo-collisions for Hash Functions ARIRANG-224/384

In this paper we analyse the security of the SHA-3 candidate ARIRANG. We show that bitwise complementation of whole registers turns out to be very useful for constructing high-probability differential characteristics in the function. We use this approach to find nearcollisions with Hamming weight 32 for the full compression function as well as collisions for the compression function of ARIRANG ...

Practical Near-Collisions and Collisions on Round-Reduced ECHO-256 Compression Function

In this paper, we present new results on the second-round SHA-3 candidate ECHO. We describe a method to construct a collision in the compression function of ECHO-256 reduced to four rounds in 2 operations on AES-columns without significant memory requirements. Our attack uses the most recent analyses on ECHO, in particular the SuperSBox and SuperMixColumns layers to utilize efficiently the avai...

Collisions and Near-Collisions for Reduced-Round Tiger

We describe a collision-finding attack on 16 rounds of the Tiger hash function requiring the time for about 2 compression function invocations. This extends to a collision-finding attack on 17 rounds of the Tiger hash function in time of about 2 compression function invocations. Another attack generates circular near-collisions, for 20 rounds of Tiger with work less than that of 2 compression f...
